The SERENEDI Platform

Healthcare EDI, Decoded

SERENEDI is a middleware platform that transforms HIPAA X12 EDI transactions into structured relational data you can query, transform, and integrate using standard tools — SQL, CSV, and XML.

The Problem with Healthcare EDI

HIPAA X12 EDI is one of the most complex data formats in use today. A single 837 claim can contain hundreds of nested loops, situational segments, and context-dependent codes — all packed into a flat character stream with no labels.

Most organizations deal with this complexity in one of three ways: expensive enterprise middleware suites, fragile custom parsers maintained by a single developer who can never leave, or manual processes that don’t scale.

SERENEDI takes a different approach.

The SERENEDI Approach

SERENEDI maps every element defined in the HIPAA Implementation Guides to business-friendly column names with native data types. Dates become dates. Dollar amounts become decimals. Code values become readable strings.

The result: your EDI data is immediately accessible to anyone who knows SQL. No specialized EDI training required. No proprietary query language. The same skills your team already has.

SERENEDI handles the complexity so your team doesn’t have to.

Eight Integration Workflows, One Platform

Every common EDI integration pattern, built in and ready to use. Each workflow is triggered automatically — drop a file, and SERENEDI handles the rest.

EDI → CSV

Parse inbound EDI files and extract the data into flat CSV files with business-friendly column headers. Perfect for feeding data into spreadsheets, reporting tools, or bulk database imports.

CSV → EDI

Generate compliant outbound EDI transactions from simple CSV input files. Map your flat data to the full HIPAA hierarchical structure — SERENEDI handles loops, segments, and element-level validation automatically.

EDI → XML

Convert inbound EDI transactions into structured XML documents that preserve the full hierarchical relationships. Ideal for integration with systems that consume XML natively — APIs, ESBs, and document-oriented workflows.

XML → EDI

Build outbound EDI transactions from XML source documents. Feed SERENEDI a structured XML file and receive a fully compliant HIPAA X12 transaction — validated, formatted, and ready to send.

EDI → BIN (Archive)

Ingest EDI files into SERENEDI’s BIN system for long-term storage, versioning, and retrieval. Each transaction is individually addressable and can be re-extracted or reprocessed at any time.

BIN → EDI (Reconstruct)

Reconstruct EDI files from the BIN system, or pull your enterprise data from a stored procedure mapped according SERENEDI’s schema. Pull individual transactions or batches back out as compliant X12 files — useful for resubmission, auditing, or feeding into downstream systems.

EDI → HDB (Hierarchical Database)

Load EDI data into SERENEDI’s hierarchical database, which mirrors the exact loop structure defined in the HIPAA implementation guides. Query at any level — from the interchange envelope down to individual code values.

Integrity Validation

Run HIPAA compliance validation against any EDI file and generate a detailed HTML integrity report. Checks segment requirements, element data types, code set values, and implementation guide-level situational rules (SNIP 3-5 validations are limited to a subset of the supported transactions)

Designed Around the HIPAA Specifications

Our schema conveys the full data contained within the HIPAA Implementation Guides published by ASC X12, but uses a unique schema that encapsulates one, two or three elements with maps named after the business information they represent.

Business-Friendly Names

Columns follow a consistent naming convention across all specifications. L2300_CLM02_TOT_CLM_CHG_AMT is the Claim Total Claim Charge Amount. L2310A_REF_STAT_LIC_NR is an Attending Provider Secondary Identification (State License Number).

Native Data Types

For database storage, dates are stored as dates. Currency values are decimals. Counts are integers. No more casting strings, parsing 8-digit date fields, or dividing by 100 to get dollar amounts.

Complete Mapping Coverage

Every element defined in every supported HIPAA Implementation Guide is mapped — not just the commonly used ones. Situational elements, composite sub-elements, and repeated loops are all built-in to enable any valid EDI file to be parsed or encoded.

Event-Driven Automation

SERENEDI is oriented around a straightforward, easily learned trigger/event system that is flexible and expandable.

Triggers

Configure file-based triggers that monitor folders for new EDI files. Triggers support glob pattern filtering, so you can route different file types to different workflows automatically. SFTP integration is built in — pull files from remote trading partners on a schedule.

Events

Every trigger generates an event in the BIZ_EVENT queue. Events are processed by SERENEDI’s worker engine, which handles parsing, transformation, validation, and output generation. Every step is logged to BIZ_MSG — giving you a complete audit trail from file arrival to final output.

Built for Developers

SERENEDI is designed to integrate with your existing development workflow, not replace it.

SQL-First Interface

Everything in SERENEDI is accessible via SQL. Stored procedures for extracting seed data, views for querying parsed transactions, and tables for managing configuration. If you know SQL, you know SERENEDI.

Standard Formats

Import and export data using CSV, XML, and SQL tables and stored procedures. Your data is always in a format you can read, inspect, and process with standard tools.

Complete Audit Trail

Every event, every processing step, and every error is logged to the BIZ_MSG table. Troubleshoot integration issues, track processing history, and demonstrate compliance — all from a single queryable log.

Deployment Options

On-Premises: Windows Server

Install SERENEDI on Windows Server 2016+ with SQL Server. Full local control over your data and infrastructure. Includes SERENEDI Studio — a graphical interface for inspecting transactions, managing triggers, browsing the BIN archive, and testing integrations interactively.

Requirements: Windows Server 2016+ or Windows 10/11, SQL Server, 4 GB RAM minimum, 1 GB disk space base.

Cloud-Native: Snowflake (COMING SOON)

Install directly from the Snowflake Marketplace as a Native App. Zero infrastructure to manage — SERENEDI runs inside your Snowflake account using Snowpark Container Services. Your data never leaves your environment. Query your EDI data with the same SQL you use for everything else in Snowflake.

Requirements: Snowflake account with compute pool access. No additional infrastructure needed.
